Those who microdose have a wide range of goals, including mental wellness, creativity, and spiritual experiences. He eats a small nibble of the plant, which contains psilocybin, every other day. He also meditates, and says that the combination helps him feel more grounded and aware of his surroundings.

The effects of psilocybin vary with dose and setting, and can include altered perceptions, ego dissolution, increased empathy with others and the natural world, and spiritual or mystical experiences. A recent study suggests that psilocybin may reduce anxiety, depression, and chronic pain in cancer patients.

But a bad trip or even psychosis are possible, and some microdosers have reported flashbacks after using psychedelics. This is known as HPPD – hallucinogen persisting perception disorder.
